Red Reishi Muchroom

What is Red Reishi?

THE VAROIUS PARTS OF RED REISHI
The three main areas of the mushroom are the fruit-body, the spores and the mycelium.

The fruit-body of the red reishi is the major part of the plant that is widely used for consumption. This part of the mushroom is equivalent to the flower of a plant or the fruit from a tree and consists mainly the stem and the cap of the mushroom.

MYCELIUM
The mycelium is the growth form of the organism, the stable state in which all of the life processes occur; growth, feeding, competing for survival and some forms of reproduction. This part, which is similar to the roots of a fruit tree, is normally 18-21 days old also another major part of the mushroom that is widely used for consumption since it has a higher concentration of organic germanium and polysaccharides. Due to this high concentration, mycelium has tremendous positive effects on the human brain as well as the immune system.

SPORES
The spores are the dust like reproductive cells that are formed from underneath the cap of the mushroom. Similar to the seeds of a fruit, these dust particles are spread by the wind and once fallen on decaying wood or logs, will start again the whole growing process of the Red Reishi. Although still on going, the research to date has shown that the spores are up to 17 times more potent than both the fruit body and mycelium, and is mainly used to aid in the treatment of cancer and HIV.
BASIC GROWTH PROCESS AND CONDITIONS OF LING ZHI
Mature mushrooms produce spores and drop them onto the ground and in the air to spread. They are basically the seeds and are used to spread the next generation of fungi. The spores are released and drop to the surface and make contact with moisture on the ground or humidity in the air.  The spores sink down into the soil and begin to germinate producing mycelium.  The mycelium grows into a larger mass and spreads out, searching for nutrients and moisture, colonizing its environment and consuming the substrate or soil around it.

Once the mycelium has grown enough to break through the surface it is exposed to sunlight and initiates the next process of growth were the actual mushrooms will begin to form.  The temperature of the environment and the amount of light exposure will determine when the mushrooms will be fruiting and each species has its own parameters for growth.  Once these specific settings are achieved pinheads will start to form.
Shortly after the pinheads will grow into fully mature mushrooms with stems and caps, the caps will stretch out and open revealing the gills underneath.  The gills are where the spores are collected before being released and are held in by a thin layer of mushroom skin called the "veil".  Once the mushroom cap grows large enough it will tear the veil releasing the spores and repeating the entire cycle.

Red Reishi is naturally grown on decaying wood or logs; however it can also be cultivated in plastic bags. The decaying wood method is normally preferred since it is the only method that will produce the spores along with the other parts of the mushroom.
